2008 Governor's Commuter Challenge
The Challenge
Save Money. Reduce Emissions. Share the Ride.

CONGRATULATIONS Capitol Mall employees for exceeding the Governor's carbon reduction goal by 19 percent and saving more than $125,000 on gas in response to the Commuter Challenge! This is in addition to the carbon and dollar savings of the many employees who were already carpooling, bicycling, walking, vanpooling and taking transit to get to work before the Challenge began.

Numbers of Interest:
  • $126,118 = gas dollars saved by employees who changed their commuting habits
  • 24% = increase in walking commuting
  • 35% = increase in carpool commuting
  • 100% = increase in bicycle commuting
  • 19% = decrease in drive-alone commute trips
  • 593,000 = pounds of carbon dioxide saved by Capitol Mall employees from June 1 to August 29, 2008 (surpassing the Governor's goal of 500,000 pounds by 19 percent)
  • 539,363 = Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMTs) reduced over the course of the Challenge
  • 5,160 = number of respondents to the opening survey
  • 3,396 = number of respondents to the closing survey
  • 20 lbs = carbon dioxide saved with every gallon of gas not burned

As we wrap up the Challenge, after a summer of great work and leadership from Capitol Mall employees, we want to thank everyone involved for all your time and dedication to saving gas dollars and switching from driving alone to lower-cost, low-carbon commuting alternatives. We also want to recognize the many employees who were already engaged in low-carbon commuting before the Challenge began.

The success of the Challenge is partly due to the Capitol Mall area's strong prior investments in transportation-options infrastructure, i.e. free bus passes. Perhaps most significantly, the Challenge's broader vision -- that lifestyle change to reduce carbon emissions is possible and desirable -- found widespread support among state employees.

Response rates to the surveys were two and three times greater than average response rates to surveys, and respondents wrote more than 2,200 comments centered on low-cost, low-carbon commuting including how they did it and the barriers they overcame doing it.

Thank you again for meeting the Challenge!
